Growth Spurts – What To Expect

by | Sep 22, 2021 | Baby Sleep

During their first 12 months, babies grow rapidly in the form of growth spurts – quick, intense periods of growth. It can appear to happen pretty much overnight – one day they fit just fine into that new outfit, the following day – they’ve no chance!

And it isn’t just physical changes. Yes, they’ll grow longer and heavier but their brain will also be developing.

Because of this, their behaviour may suddenly change and you may need to alter their routine slightly.

But don’t worry, this is perfectly normal. In this blog post I will share with you:

  • How to spot a growth spurt;
  • When growth spurts are most likely to happen, and;
  • How to deal with growth spurts.

How to spot a growth spurt

Your little one will likely give you some warning signs, including:

  • An increase in hunger
  • Breastfed babies may take longer to feed
  • An increase in sleepiness or needing less sleep
  • Becoming clingy and cranky

When are growth spurts most likely to happen?

Growth Spurts

They only last a couple of days so you can get back to your normal routine soon enough.

Remember, this is just a guide so don’t worry if your baby’s growth spurts don’t happen at these exact times.

How to deal with Growth Spurts

Even though growth spurts only last a couple of days, there are still things you can do to make them as easy for you and baby as possible:

  1. Be prepared – if you know when they’re coming, they won’t be as much of a shock!
  2. Give the baby what she wants – whatever she wants during the growth spurt!
  3. Take care of yourself – this will help you to get through it.

If you’re not sure whether or not your little one is experiencing a growth spurt, download my handy handout which goes into more detail about what to look for and how to deal with growth spurts.
