Newborn Sleep Shaping

Your body is still healing from labour. Your little one cries, fusses, cluster feeds, feeds on demand or fights their sleep. You think it is normal and you quietly get on with it, after all that’s what everybody else does right? Many parents rock, feed or walk their little bub to sleep which works for some families but others it means spending hours rocking, feeding, and walking your little bub around to get them to sleep. This quickly becomes exhausting especially if your little one is constantly feeding, or feeding little, crying a lot, suffering from gas, or trapped wind or reflux symptoms, and he or she finds it difficult to just drift off. If you have other children, it can be even more challenging; the newborn issues, the emotions, and transitions for their sibling of a new arrival and managing routines together. I specialise in sibling approaches and will support you through this transition.

So, what exactly is Newborn Sleep Shaping?

Newborn Sleep shaping is the process of gently and gradually putting positive sleep habits in place to help your little one settle easily working towards independently, sleep, feed, nap, and night feed at the correct age-appropriate times. It involves using a hands-on approach, as well as supportive age appropriate and scientifically proven sleep techniques to calm and settle your baby. We look at your parenting style, your values as a family, baby’s temperament, medical issues, fussiness, baby’s schedule, feeding patterns, bedroom environment and your nursery set up.

4 Months to 12 Months

Around the 4 months mark many parents are keen on getting their little ones into some sort of routine. By this stage in their lives, babies are getting to the routine of daily life. But issues with sleep can last through to the toddler years and beyond.

At 4 months it is all going on! Teething, early weaning, attempting to establish a nap routine and your baby starts producing their own Sleep Hormone, Melatonin. Then you have the 4-month sleep regression which is when your baby’s sleeping habits change permanently. Some babies go back to sleeping well in a couple of weeks, but others may need a proactive approach to changing these habits.

You may have been surviving on broken sleep until now, which could be affecting your enjoyment of life as a parent. The excitement of a new baby may have carried you through the first few months, but no one can run on empty, and tiredness and frustration can have a negative impact on your life. Many parents return to work during this stage of their baby’s life, so broken sleep quickly becomes unmanageable. The good news is that in their early years, children can learn and adapt quickly.

Are you having any of these issues?

  • Cat napping
  • Routine going pear shaped after a while
  • No set feeding schedule or issues with feeding
  • Frequent night wakings
  • Baby being unsettled
  • Day and night confusion
  • Waking within the first hour

I use gentle sleep training to teach your baby to sleep. Together, we can establish night-time feeding routines and cot transition. We can look at weaning and starting solids and ways to produce more melatonin to aid better sleep.

We will be addressing all the following:

  • Establish a day and night time age-appropriate feeding routine
  • Sleeping through the night
  • Self-settling
  • Establishing an age-appropriate nap routine
  • Co sleeping to cot transition
  • Crib to cot transition
  • Bedroom transition
  • Bedroom environment
  • Fixing early morning wake ups

1 Year to 3 Years

There are many reasons for sleep issues once your child reaches 12 months old. Sleep associations where your little one is dependent on you to put them to sleep, bedtime battles, bedtime anxiety, transitioning from cot to bed, dropping a nap, nap refusal, late bedtime, or even the arrival of a new sibling can all instigate problems with your child’s sleep. Maybe you are dealing with ongoing issues from when your child was younger. Whatever the issue, I am here to help.

In this programme we will be looking at:

  • Learning to self-settle for naps and bedtime
  • Dropping night feeds
  • Sleeping through the night
  • Addressing frequent night wakings
  • Bedtime resistance
  • Solids routine
  • age-appropriate milk and food intake
  • Dropping naps
  • Bedroom transitions
  • milestones
  • Anxiety
  • Bedroom transition
  • Boundaries and consistency
  • Nightmares and fear

3 Years to 5 Years

For older toddlers sleep issues can be harder. The bedtime resistance is real with a whole different level of behaviour issues and the multiple night wakings are tough getting your head around!

  • Your child keeps climbing out of bed and coming to your room.
  • You can’t decide on a consistent settling method
  • You don’t want any siblings disturbed but don’t know how to manage the night wakings
  • You don’t know how much crying is normal at this age
  • When your child says they are hungry or wants a glass of water you feel bad saying no
  • You are attempting potty training but its triggering night wakings and you don’t know where to draw the line with the toilet requirements
  • You don’t really want to bring your child into bed so one of you end up camping out in their bedroom
  • You think a transition into a big bed will help but you don’t know what’s an appropriate age
  • You are struggling with early morning wake ups
  • You are looking for a gentle approach
  • Sleep issues in this age range are more common than you may think. It is a big age for a little person. Bedtime anxiety can peak, fear of the dark, nightmares, shadows and monsters become real! From a child’s perspective in their little world these things actually exist
  • As a qualified and highly trained Psychotherapist my approach to sleep training a child at this age is completely unique.

At this age sometimes an attachment to parents/sleep association can often result in bedtime resistance, trigger multiple night wakings and contribute to early morning wake ups. It is important to have a consistent and suitable approach. It is not just about selecting the correct sleep training method for this age but also for you as a family. It is also about using the perfect combination of sleep tools together with a sleep method and plan to help reduce anxiety, so your child feels relaxed enough to want to fall asleep.

We will be looking at:

  • Bedtime environment
  • Bedroom transition
  • Age-appropriate bedtime
  • Bedtime battles
  • Self-Settling
  • Sleeping through the night
  • Separation anxiety
  • Food Intake
  • Sibling routine
  • Fixing Early Morning Wake Up’s
  • Any other sleep issues present
